It stopped, calculating. It had been ordered to protect uninfected. It was doing so. But it had not been given a limit on the number of uninfected to protect, or a radius for their search.

It assumed there were humans outside of the facility, even though it had never seen them. New humans came from somewhere. Protecting them was therefore consistent with their orders.

The facility could be purged. It knew that. It did not know how it was done.

It was hard to answer the question with a nod or shake, because this was both. It eventually nodded.

But until it found how to purge the facility, it had one human to protect. It picked up the vest again. It would not protect the human from most bites, but the virus had only recently escaped containment. The infection smelled new on many of the corpses. Mutations would eventually begin. Protecting the human would become more difficult.
