Evidently he had found some new question that would be an inconvenience to those that thought themselves important. This was, intentionally and not, a pattern in his life.

But knowing the history of his own people, the toast was especially ironic. "As god-king Adas bade us say before his fall and our fracturing: Joined as one." It had caused him no particular pain to proclaim it as well. That was not the part of Adas' tenets that had stood in his way.

He drained his glass and set it aside, the shell of his face sliding back into place.
